Poole’s
Luscombe Valley Steam Collection in Dorset represents
a lifetime’s
dedication to steam, lovingly and meticulously assembled by Richard
Knott.
It comprises a five inch gauge, ground-level, passenger-carrying
railway, a traction engine, a steam lorry, a full-sized steam
car and a 26 ft steam launch, just to mention a few of the attractions.
The collection is based in the grounds of Richard Knott's home, which
is open to the public four times a year and regularly brings
in the crowds. It raises money for charity at the same
time as giving pleasure to both enthusiasts and the general public.
On Open Days {see Events Page}
each visitor is welcome to ride on the railway as many times
as they would like to. It’s got a reputation for being pretty addictive. Everyone is also encouraged to view the other steam exhibits
during their stay.
But
that’s not all.
Moving indoors, there
is an extensive “OO” model
railway layout, based on the Somerset and Dorset line. This
is always on view during open days and the sheer detail will
probably take your breath away.
New For 2010! LVR has elected to raise money for the Lewis-Manning Hospice over the next twelve months. It is Poole's local voluntary hospice offering specialist palliative care to over 600 local people living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. They are currently raising money to extend the existing building so that they may help more people.
